When I was in the 7th grade, my favorite author was S.E. Hinton. Now, S.E. Hinton is a woman, but I didn’t know that when I was enamored with her books (That Was Then, This is Now, Rumble Fish, Tex, and The Outsiders), back in the early 80’s. I mean, how could’ve I known that when all of her writings chronicled the lives of teenaged boys? Man, I loved her books! I just identified with the characters, and their lives. Well, imagine my excitement when Hollywood decided to bring Hinton’s novels to the big screen? My favorite of those films was The Outsiders. Now, the movie wasn’t exactly a box office hit, or anything Oscar-worthy! But, it was a great adaptation from the book. What I remember the most, about the film, was the plethora of hotties! Most of the guys cast in the movie were unknown, but later became big stars (Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Tom Cruise, Matt Dillon, Patrick Swayze, and Ralph Macchio). The actor I loved the most was Matt Dillon, because he played the character, Dallas Winston. Dallas was the roughest, most criminal of the gang member characters. And while I was nothing like that, in middle school, I somehow felt very connected with his persona. At any rate, Matt Dillon went on to do many more films; and I’d love to see him win an Oscar, someday!
