I loved him in Good Morning, Vietnam

"Mork and Mindy" with Robin Williams and Pam Dawber.

“Mork and Mindy” with Robin Williams and Pam Dawber.

In the late 1970’s, my favorite comedy was Three’s Company.  But, then came along a surprise hit called Mork & Mindy.  I had never laughed as hard as I did when that show first aired.  My family felt the same way.  And the next day, it was all the talk at school and at the water coolers.  But, as quickly as it became a surprise hit, it was off the air.  I remember being so angry that it was no longer on television.  But, I guess it was good that it was taken off;  instead of experiencing a slow, painful death (like Happy Days).  Much to my delight, Robin Williams (who played Mork) went on to become a superstar.  He is loved by so many generations that I bet most of the younger folks don’t even know that he got his big break on Mork & Mindy.  Well, imagine my sadness when I discovered that Robin Williams had killed himself today?  Depression is no joke, folks.  I want to thank Robin Williams for bringing so much joy into my life.  Robin Williams QuotesHe made me laugh more than any other actor I’ve ever seen in a movie, stand-up gig, or television show.  I think President Obama said it best when he released this statement, “Robin Williams was an airman, a doctor, a genie, a nanny, a president, a professor, Peter Pan, and everything in between.  But he was one of a kind.  He arrived in our lives as an alien — but he ended up touching every element of the human spirit.  He made us laugh.  He made us cry.  He gave his immeasurable talent freely and generously to those who needed it most — from our troops stationed abroad to the marginalized on our own streets.”  07/21/51 – 08/11/14, age 63.

There's nothing selfish about suicide. The way I see it is like this:

Some things can never be completely understood about suicide.  But, the pain is real (and needs to be talked about).  I think it’s sad that Robin’s suicide has opened up the dialogue.  But, at the same time, he may be doing many a favor who are feeling the same way he did.  Now, all of us are stopping to look at our loved ones, and making sure they’re alright; and that’s a beautiful thing.”
